New forms of Media Publishing

Flew(2002) stated that as a result of the evolution of new media technologies, globalisation occurs.New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog)

Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulable, networkable, dense, compressible, and impartial. Bloggers who previously wrote endlessly about everything from politics to tech tips, advice and random experiments to the next level by filming and broadcasting their work.

There are 'new trends' that include types of blogs such as MoBlogs, Splogs, Vlogs, etc. Vlogs is a form of blogging for which the medium is video. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlog).

They are available and simple to everyone in these days.According to Jakab Nielsen, if the website is not easy to use, people simple leave.

However, the most important remaining ingredient of a truly democratized electronic news gathering is neither a kind of hardware nor a variety of software, but a species of literacy.
Futurist Howard Rheingold says the ultimate democratization of the media will not be about technology advances; rather, it will entail upholding old fashioned standards to earn viewers' trust.

Designing of Online Vs Print

Anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design. There are so many differences between the two media that it is necessary to take different design approaches to utilize the strengths of each medium and minimize its weaknesses.

Nielsen (1999) points out that ‘print design is 2-dimensional, with much attention paid to layout’. It is obviously possible for the reader to turn the page, but substantial interplay between different spreads is rare. Typically, each view is a design unit created for a fixed size canvas and it is often a big canvas when designing newspapers or posters. To the contrary, Web design is ‘1-dimensional and N-dimensional’ with up-and-down scrolling experience for the users.

Document designers need to resist ‘romancing the screen’ and focus on how readers interact with documents – how they create meaning from the visual and verbal content. (Schriver 1997, p.362) Print design is based on letting the eyes walk over the information, selectively looking at information objects and using spatial juxtaposition to make page elements enhance and explain each other. On the other hand, web design functions by letting the hands move the information (by scrolling or clicking); information relationships are expressed temporally as part of an interaction and user movement.

These are the examples of the differences of online and printed design.

As clarified by Nielsen (1999),the differences between online and print design must be appreciated by making use of the strengths and underrating the weaknesses.

Classifications of Blogs

There are several different types of blogs from those of the personal diary type to those intended to offer the public more information, or more accurate information, than that made available by typical news outlets (Holetzy, 2008).

Margaret Simons mention few types of blogs are Digest blog, Exhibition blogs, News blog, etc. Blogs are categorized based on the content enabling for readers to make it easier for them to search what blogs that may interest them. Blogs are class are categorized according to Technorati (2008):
  • Technology
  • Polictics
  • Business
  • Sports
  • Lifestyle
  • Entertainment

Blogging Community

A blogging community is a collective community of all blogs connected with one another virtually by sharing a common interest. In order for bloggers to connect with other bloggers, they need to link their page to other bloggers page on the side bar. This bloggers interact via online only.

One example of a blogging community is Nuffnang. Nuffnang is Asia's first blog advertising company. Nuffnang aims at allowing advertisers such as Citibank, Nokia, Nike, Air Asia, etc. to serve graphic or video based advertisements onto the thousands of local blogs that are signed up with Nuffnang.

Blogging Phenomenon

Nowadays, blogging is just a normal phenomenon which everyone is doing the same thing each every second at this world. A blog is an online diary. It's a way that you can express your opinions, thoughts and ideas without any boundaries. It is easy and efficient to do so. Bloggers share a common interest between them as well.

According to The Star Online, 57 million exist in 2007; however, today there are 112.8 million blogs that are being tracked (Technorati, 2008). Blogging phenomenon is unstoppable and inescapable as as everyone wants to express their thoughts and be shared around the world.

Blogging Trends

In Malaysia, 64% bloggers are female although in India where it is overwhelmingly a male domain and in Korea where blogging is a part of everyday life for all (Windows Live Space, 2008). In Asia, 55% of bloggers are female and 45% are male bloggers (Windows Live Space, 2008). This shows how women are dominant in Asia.

Malaysia is known for political blogs compared to Asia where its only 14% of bloggers writes about politics. Below shows the percentage of blogs all over the country:

However, in Korea, bloging is taken a new whole level. Blogging is used for social networking but also for business such as advertising.

Why Blog?

The benefits of a blogosphere is that it creates a common interest like for example, a blogger might want to blog about fashion, therefore other bloggers may share the same interest to that particular blogger. According to Windows Live Space (2008), Asia's blogosphere is primarily driven by social connections, people wanting to have their own corner of cyberspace where they can express themselves with their network of friends and family. Therefore bloggers would want to express their ideas and thoughts to a network of friends and whoever may it be. It's just simple to create a blog and it just takes few minutes.

Others may want to blog the purpose of having a personal space in the internet. A blog may be the purpose of having a place for them to say anything they want, akin to have your individual space on a public notice board (Thinkquest, 2008).
