Reflections

Finally, it comes to the end of my blog. To be homest, this is a tough job for me due to the fact that a lot of research is required to be done for the blog. As an academic blogger, it is important to take into account that purpose, audience and context as Shriver (1997) stressed on.

As a blogger, there is many things which need to be concerned before posted it online. Through this blog, it is a good opportunity to let me gain more knowledge on the issues of publication and design and also the dilemma such as offensive and seditious which is facing by the document designers as well.

In my previous blog i had wrote, i shared more about my personal feelings, interests etc. Therefore, it doesn't required me any research before i write my blog. It is hard for
writing an academic blog, however, i do learned and had an experience for it. I guess, i will still like to blogging for oneself but in more academic way.

Intellectual Property-Trademark

Trademark is a sign which serves to distinguish the goods or services of an industrial or a commercial enterprise or a group of such enterprise. A trademark is a type of intellectual property, and typically a name, word, logo, symbol, design, image, or a combination of these elements.(Wikipedia, 2007)

Trademark law protects the rights of business who use distinctive names, designs, logo, slogans, signifier to identify and distinguish their products and services. This protection can be last as long as the company uses the trademark in commerce.(Intellectual Property Law-Trademark Law)

Trademarked is a way to protects the rights of the registered companies. (Trademark Act 1976)We know that trade marked can be infringed, and there is a lot of the products in the market confused customers from buying it. For an example, we all knew that Nike is a good product and another produce a product with the logo of Nike on it. Therefore, it would be an infringed on a regular basis.

Trademark does not expired if it is registered, a trademarked can only be "abandoned" or its registration can be canceled or revoked if the marks is not continuously used. (Wikipedia, 2007) In other words, it can be last as long as the company uses the trademarked in commerce. For example, Coca-Cola has been protected for over a century.

Trademarked is an important issues for a company to protect their own rights and avoiding others who trying to get advantage from it. Especially for famous trademarked such as Mcdonalds, Nike, Coca-Cola etc.

Justice Charles L.Woodbury wrote that "only in this way can we protect intellectual property, the labors of the mind, productions and interests are as much a man's own...as the wheat he cultivate, or the flocks he rear."
(1 Woodb. & M. 53, 3 West.L.J. 151, 7 F.Cas. 197, No. 3662, 2 Robb.Pat.Cas. 303, Merw.Pat.Inv. 414)

New Media and Political Campaign

The politics campaign did by Obama was the smartest publicity siege that's been seen in a long time. We can't denied that the media has a big influence if you use it in a smart way of it. It's particularly worth paying attention to how Obama and his crew of merry techstres pay attention to the net.

There are two articles talks about how political campaigns used new media to win supporters in election (e.g. Obama, PAS). It shows that Malaysia' digital revolution and Obama uses iphone to win support. Although, issues using the new media that affects politicians such as no privacy and no trust in them (e.g. Youtube, Blogs). A key medium in spreading all kinds of information (Obama states this tool is designed to help you become more directly involved in the campaign to change the country). It relates to the concepts of Naughton (2006) personalization and interactivity and 'push and pull' medium.

The General Election has underscored how important it is to engage new media tools and strategies to reach changing audiences, with Malaysians increasingly using online media such as blogs, wikis and podcasts to obtain information or to express their opinions (The Star, 2008)

Mobile phone and cyberspace contributed to the shift in balance of influence on the mindset of the public. Information from Cyberspace might be true or false due to every users can create information and post it. Therefore, users may consider whether or not the information which they received is reliable and make the decision themselves.

The Digital Future

In this advance technology era, changing nature of media and the way in which we access information is different compare the previous way we did. People needs accurate information is a fastest way.

Nowadays, we can easily get information anytime and anywhere and it makes more convenience for those who live busy city life.People may now obtain news directly from Internet without any filtering from publishers, editors or journalists (IWR 2006).

Interactivity is the important thing in terms of development of new media. We use advance technology to keep in touch with people who are busy or far away. Internet is one of the device that connect with each others and fast response as well.

Approach which was using for traditional media such as gatekeepers has no longer suitable in this society. According to Nigel Paine, traditional media has to work with the changes, not against the changes, and hope for new potential contributors.

In the new age, there are 39 and a half thousand television stations in the world, so there's a lot more and 60% of those produce original content. In other words, it will become increasing important is the concept of user-generated content. Nigel Paine also says that new media is about co-creation, sharing and engage as well.

The Blogging Revolution

Nowadays, blogging is just a natural phenomenon that happens everyday and everywhere in the world. No matter who you are, where are you from, as long as you get an Internet connection and you are able to make a blog. Bloggers share their interest, thinking and also having an interactive between each others.

According to Anthony Loewenstein, there's no regular polling as we have in the West about certain issues and ideas, so the web is one way, only one way, to gauge people how actually view both their own countries and the world. However, there are many bloggers in Malaysia used to blog sensitive issue on Internet. Malaysia is known for political blogs compare to Asia where is only 14% of bloggers write about politics.

Blogging issues cause illusion of privacy, threathing to the organization. Nevertheless, it could be used positively by organizations as well. The strengths of the medium include the instanteity of publication, interactivity, and the lack of marketing constraints. (Lasica 2001) Blogging also offers websites the sought after "stickiness" that results from frequently updated content. (Asaravala 2000).

Bloggers are bounced by laws on defamation, sedition, and other limits. (Malaysia General News 2007) PM, Abdullah Badawi's statements in January 2007 was an official restatement of the "no censorship on the Internet" policy announced in August 2006 that bloggers who publish seditious, malicious, or defamatory content will be reported to police.

New forms of Media Publishing

Flew(2002) stated that as a result of the evolution of new media technologies, globalisation occurs.New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog)

Most technologies described as "new media" are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulable, networkable, dense, compressible, and impartial. Bloggers who previously wrote endlessly about everything from politics to tech tips, advice and random experiments to the next level by filming and broadcasting their work.

There are 'new trends' that include types of blogs such as MoBlogs, Splogs, Vlogs, etc. Vlogs is a form of blogging for which the medium is video. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlog).

They are available and simple to everyone in these days.According to Jakab Nielsen, if the website is not easy to use, people simple leave.

However, the most important remaining ingredient of a truly democratized electronic news gathering is neither a kind of hardware nor a variety of software, but a species of literacy.
Futurist Howard Rheingold says the ultimate democratization of the media will not be about technology advances; rather, it will entail upholding old fashioned standards to earn viewers' trust.

Designing of Online Vs Print

Anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design. There are so many differences between the two media that it is necessary to take different design approaches to utilize the strengths of each medium and minimize its weaknesses.

Nielsen (1999) points out that ‘print design is 2-dimensional, with much attention paid to layout’. It is obviously possible for the reader to turn the page, but substantial interplay between different spreads is rare. Typically, each view is a design unit created for a fixed size canvas and it is often a big canvas when designing newspapers or posters. To the contrary, Web design is ‘1-dimensional and N-dimensional’ with up-and-down scrolling experience for the users.

Document designers need to resist ‘romancing the screen’ and focus on how readers interact with documents – how they create meaning from the visual and verbal content. (Schriver 1997, p.362) Print design is based on letting the eyes walk over the information, selectively looking at information objects and using spatial juxtaposition to make page elements enhance and explain each other. On the other hand, web design functions by letting the hands move the information (by scrolling or clicking); information relationships are expressed temporally as part of an interaction and user movement.

These are the examples of the differences of online and printed design.

As clarified by Nielsen (1999),the differences between online and print design must be appreciated by making use of the strengths and underrating the weaknesses.
